The Cefn Stud is based on the south-facing slopes of Cefn Bryn, the long moorland ridge which runs along the centre of the beautiful Gower Peninsula in South Wales and has been known to generations of Gower people as the "backbone" of Gower.
SECTION A MARES AND FOALS ON CEFN BRYN
Though over the years the stud has been involved in the breeding of Section A’s, B’s, C’s and D’s, the Section B’s and D’s have gradually been phased out, and breeding is now concentrated on the production of top class Section A’s and C’s. The mares and youngstock live out all year round, coming in only for worming and at weaning, or in preparation for Shows or Sales. The Section A mares run out on Cefn Bryn with a WPCS Premium Stallion during the summer months, while the Section C mares and the remaining Section D mares run out with two Section C stallions on the farm, the stallions being brought in at the end of August.
Years of careful and selective breeding from the best and oldest bloodlines have resulted in stock which are not only of the best conformation, hardy and true to type, but also sweet-natured and easy to handle, and Cefn ponies have formed the basis of new studs of Welsh ponies in many parts of the world. During the 1980's and early 90's, Colin transferred several of his Sec. A mares and a few of his Sec. C mares to his daughter Irene, whose enthusiasm and support had contributed so much to the success of the Cefn Stud at that time. After the sad and untimely loss of Irene in 2002, her ponies were taken on by her daughter, Alyson, who continues the same breeding policy with her grandfather, both Colin's and Alyson's mares running together.
Foals and youngstock (Section A and Section C ) are frequently for sale, and visitors are always welcome to come and see these lovely native ponies in their natural surroundings, but please phone or e-mail first (see Contact Page for details).
